What is RoRo Shipping?

RoRo (roll-on-roll-off) is a safe and reliable way of transporting vehicles, mining equipment, trucks, buses, boats, and agricultural machinery overseas by sea. Unlike container shipping, RoRo vessels are designed to accommodate cars and rolling cargo by allowing them to be driven or towed on and off the boat using rolltrailers. These vessels have dedicated ramps and parking areas to facilitate the efficient loading and unloading of cargo.

It is considered the safest and most economical way of heavy equipment transportation due to the ease of loading and unloading, often proving cheaper than container shipping.

How Does RoRo Shipping Work?

All vehicles are driven or towed onto the vessel via a wide stern ramp by qualified handlers (stevedores). Stevedores ensure your vehicle is carefully driven on at the origin port and rolled off at the destination. The vessels can have up to 13 decks (with new designs offering 14 decks) with liftable ramps. Vehicles are placed on the most suitable decks depending on height, length, and weight, and then secured to lashing points using braces or straps to prevent movement during rough weather.

We transport almost any type of cargo. Our fleet of rolltrailers incorporates several different sizes of cargo-carrying equipment ranging from 20 to 80 feet, with the capacity to handle up to 160 MT. Longer rolltrailers are equipped with integrated rails for transporting trains with bogies.

When is RoRo Shipping Used?

RoRo shipping is used across various industries, including the automotive sector for new/used cars, buses, trucks, and trams. It is also heavily utilized by the mining and construction industries for transporting bulldozers, excavators, cranes, and other oversized vehicles. Additionally, it is ideal for project cargo that doesn't fit standard containers, as well as emergency vehicles for disaster relief operations.

Advantages of RoRo

The main benefits of RoRo shipping include time and cost efficiency, as well as reduced risk of damage. Because vehicles are driven or towed, there is less handling and lifting risk compared to container loading. Our pure car/truck carriers (PCTC) are built for maximum flexibility, handling diverse cargo types from standard cars to unconventionally-sized breakbulk shipments.

We operate a flexible fleet of around 40 RoRo vessels, including large New Horizon vessels offering up to 6.5 meters of free deck height, 12 meters of ramp width, and a ramp capacity of 375 MT. These systems eliminate the need for crane lifting in both load and discharge ports, making operations safer and more cost-effective.

In 2024, our new Aurora Class vessels represent the largest and most environmentally friendly car carriers in the industry, receiving ammonia and methanol-ready notations.

Examples of RoRo Ships in Emergency Aid

Red Cross Support

In 2005, our operations successfully transported 44 trucks from Gothenburg, Sweden to Sumatra, Indonesia, supporting relief efforts after the South East Asia tsunami. In January 2006, we cooperated with Red Cross Norway to transport relief initiatives to Mombasa, Kenya, and famine-stricken regions in eastern Africa.

SOS Children's Villages

In 2005, a partnership was established with SOS Children's Villages to finance the building and running of three family houses and a social center in the Lipa Children's Village in the Philippines. In 2008, the partnership extended to financing the construction of four family houses in Calbayog and providing running costs in Cebu. This initiative also opened career paths, accepting the first young person from the village into our cadet training program.

Conclusion

RoRo shipping has become an integral part of global logistics, providing a seamless and efficient solution for transporting vehicles and rolling cargo. Its versatility, cost-effectiveness, and time efficiency make it a preferred choice for shaping the future of international trade.
